Sign Up Now Project

Sign Up Now Project

The group has recently been given a £650 Learning Promotion Grant from NIACE Dysgu Cymru for a project that will work to promote community learning opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees. We will work with a refugee community group (South People’s Projects) and Newport City Council’s community learning and library service to promote and develop community education courses that are affordable and accessible by refugees and asylum seekers in Newport.

What will we do?

Go to newsletter pageWe will allow the education providers and the community group to meet; allowing the refugee community to understand which courses are on offer and enabling the Council to understand the needs of refugees. We will work with South People's Project to produce their own newsletter like the Fafarara one for Refugee Week (right)

The two parties will also work together to organise taster courses and an awareness-raising event. In the end we hope for refugees and asylum seekers to have access to regular 10 week courses in ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages.

When will it happen and how can I support it?

The newsletter should be completed by the end of August 2005 and the taster sessions should take place in the middle of September. If you are a refugee or asylum seeker and interested in taking part in making the newsletter then email Norbert on norbertmbu@yahoo.fr. You can also contact Norbert if you want to add a story to the newsletter. If you are a member of the public interested in volunteering to support the ESOL courses then contact Judy Marris via 01633 656656.

What else do we hope to achieve?

The project’s further aim is to facilitate a two-way process of citizenship: firstly by helping refugees gain English skills and other knowledge to become active UK citizens and secondly to demonstrate to the general public that refugees and asylum seekers make a positive contribution to the community. It is intended to document the project on film so that it can be promoted further.
