The arts programme is also provided with the support of SEWREC
and Newport City Council.
Two of SEWREC's objectives are met:
1. By supporting projects like the Newport and District Refugee
Support Group and local community groups
2. By supporting public bodies to improve the way that they
work with people from all parts of our community, through
training, policy development and advice
An arts development worker, Katy from Newport City Council Arts Development and
Richard from the Welsh National Eisteddfod support visitors
of all ages. This service works in partnership
between the Newport Refugees Support group and SEWREC.
The Arts Initiative 'PAINTBACK' is presenlty in its second

elements that address the:
" Immediate need of asylum seekers and refugees for something

Paintback!

further by:

group, chaired by SEWREC, and
" Involving primary school teachers, with the support
of GEMSS, in the development of teaching materials that will
meet their curriculum needs in geography, languages, PHSE
and other subjects in order to mainstream education about
asylum and refugee issues
It is hoped to launch the Paintback! during two exhibitions
during Black History month in the autumn. In the meantime

Sewing
Machines
Use sewing machines to make, repair or fit clothes.
There are two sewing machines. Many of the visitors would
have had sewing machines in the homes they have had to leave
behind. Mohammad's work in Pakistan was making clothes
in a boutique. Here he is using the opportunity to make
a blouse for his daughter, whilst his wife has been kniting
her a purse.
If
you have a sewing machine that you would like to voluntarily
donate, please let us know Also one of our visitors
our would like the use of flat bed sewing machine, so that
he can do some work at home and make some pocket money
for his family.
